Cathy has made a beautiful “Quilt as You Go” Quilt using Free Spirit’s Sundara Oasis by Dena Designs. These luscious colors feature a fabulous elephant border print which really makes this quilt “pop.” This is a quilt you can complete in a weekend! We are going to show you how easy it is.
Step 1 – Iron your crib size batting to remove most wrinkles.
Step 2 – Take batting OUTSIDE and spray 505 on ONE side of the entire piece. 505 is very sticky and will attach to any surrounding surface, so be careful bringing it back inside to your cutting table.
Step 3 – Lay the batting down flat with STICKY SIDE UP.
Step 4 – Place your rolled up minky at the edge of the quilt batting and press the wrong side of the minky to the batting. Smooth out the wrinkles as you work your way to the other end. Now flip it over, putting the minky on the bottom and the batting facing up.
Step 7 – Label the strips 1, 2, 3 etc. from the bottom up.
Step 8 – Remove all the strips EXCEPT the number 1 strip at the bottom, leave it facing right side up at the bottom of the quilt.
Step 9 – Sew along the bottom, 1/4 inch from the edge to secure the first strip -use a walking foot for pucker free sewing! We used the fabulous Dual Feed Walking Foot on the Baby Lock Crescendo.
Step 10 – Lay down strip #2 FACE DOWN on strip #1, sew along the top edge 1/4 to 1/2″ while ensuing both layers are caught.
Step 11 – Flip the #2 strip up and iron flat.
Step 12 – Lay strip # 3 FACE DOWN on strip # 2, stitch along top edge as done in step #11. Flip up and iron.
Step 13 – Repeat until all strips are used- until the top is reached.
Step 14 – Trim and Square the quilt.
Step 15 – Cut binding strips 2 1/2″ wide and then sew together at a 45 degree angle end to end as to make one long, continuous strip. Press open the joining seams.
Step 16 – Press the strip in half, long ways, then place it on the top edge of the quilt and sew using a 1/4″ seam.
Step 17 – When you get to the corner, stop 1/4″ from the end, back stitch and remove from machine.
Step 18 – Flip strip straight up, then straight down, begin sewing at the beginning of the new edge. Repeat at each corner.
Step 19 – Turn binding to back and whip stitch the binding to the quilt.
YOU ARE DONE!
